The BMW 530e Charging Pilot Program Named the Green Car Journal's Tech of 2020

Each year, the Green Car Journal assesses the latest innovations in alternative energy uses and environmentally friendly technologies in the car world. This year, the BMW 530e plug-in hybrid model was awarded for its Inductive Charging Pilot Program. Learn more about this program and the progress its invention achieved.

What is the Inductive Charging Pilot Program?

The BMW 530e is categorized as a plug-in hybrid and is available at your Los Angeles County BMW dealer. However, this particular program was limited to a specific number of BMW customers with this model to provide feedback on a new way to charge. This pilot program began in 2018 in Germany before being introduced to BMW customers in California in 2019. It was a great way for a small group of drivers to test out experimental technology before it's introduced to the market as a whole.

What's So Special About Inductive Charging?

Instead of having to physically attach your vehicle to a plug, as with most plug-in hybrid models, the inductive charging process consists of a wireless charging station known as the GroundPad, along with a component attached to the underside of the vehicle, known as a CarPad. When you park the CarPad over the GroundPad, energy is transferred between the two surfaces with about three inches of contactless distance. Compared to the standard plug-in mechanism, the transfer of energy and efficiency rate reaches about 85-percent.

Keep Your Eyes Peeled on BMW for the Future of Electric Vehicles

Of course, this exciting program was merely a test-run and is not available for Long Beach area drivers to take advantage of at this time. However, the experiment was a successful one, and the program's 2020 Green Car Technology of the Year™ award is a fantastic honor and a win for a new wireless way to charge. Drivers may start to see this new technology available in the near future at their Los Angeles County dealership.
